So, if this Scotland thing happens, it won't happen for a few more months. In the meantime, in order to fight off stir craziness, I'm going to continue to obsessively learn as much as I can about Scotland. If you are interested in immersing with me this winter, here is what I want to work through:
Reading List
Robert Burns
Sir Walter Scott:
The Antiquary
The Heart of Midlothian
Ivanhoe
Redgauntlet
Castle Dangerous
Robert Louis Stevenson:
Kidnapped
Catriona
Treasure Island
The Master of Ballantrae
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Muriel Spark:
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
The Finishing School
+20 other titles
Other authors to check out:
Iain Banks (Complicity)
Christopher Brookmyre
Ian Rankin (The Falls)
Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting)
Laura Hird (Born Free)
I've read a bit of Alexander McCall Smith, and that was enough for me. I can see his appeal, but it's not my thing.
And, since you might have considered asking, I'm reading Gabaldon's Outlander series.
Apparently, JK Rowling lives in Edinburgh, and the train bridge that appears in the Harry Potter movies is in Scotland.
Please let me know if you have a title I should add to the list.

Scotland!
I hesitate to post anything publicly for fear of jinxing things, but I just can't keep it to myself anymore. DH has the opportunity to work for several months in his company's Edinburgh, Scotland, office, and WE ARE GOING! This has been brewing for about a year, starting with an interest survey last summer.
I have always enjoyed travel, but the truth of it is that I haven't traveled much since college, when I spent a year studying and traveling abroad. Other life goals took center stage: getting married, buying a house, having babies. I am so thrilled to have a chance to not only travel again, but to really experience life in another city for a length of time.
My year abroad was such a formative experience for me, at the age of 21. I am eager to see what it is like to be middle-aged this time. How will it be different or the same? What will it be like for the kids?
We are deep in the process of preparing. I'm hoping to blog here about our adventures, both to share with others and to have a journal of sorts for our family.
I think we have so much schedule flexibility as a homeschool family. I'm grateful that we aren't tied to a school calendar. And if we are lucky, we might be able to connect with some Scottish homeschoolers. In contrast to Germany, where my extended family lives, homeschooling is legal in Scotland.
Also, they have an Ikea, and good whiskey, and the Loch Ness Monster. Time to acquire appropriate rain gear.
